Blue Dog Trust (UK) has developed an interactive game to teach children how to behave with dogs in order to prevent dog bites. You can order it from in the US from the AVMA. And in the UK, you can order it from SoundTherapy4Pets or CompanyOfAnimals.

In 1545, a warship called the Mary Rose sank during a battle. In 1982 the ship was salvaged and the remains of a 2 yr. old mixed breed dog were found and dubbed “Hatch”. She might have been a pet, but Hatch was most likely a ratter and a successful one at that. Only partial rat skeletons have been found. The Mary Rose museum is exhibiting Hatch’s skeleton at Britain’s Crufts dog show.
Bracken the Labrador developed a cough. An x-ray showed a dark mass near his heart which turned out to be the football the dog had eaten. Surgery removed the ball and fixed the hole in Bracken’s diaphragm that allowed his stomach to move towards his heart.
Spike a Patterdale terrier started vomiting. X-rays for this dog showed the distinct outline of a rubber ducky. More amazing is that Spike had eaten the ducky 18 months earlier. Ouch!
Dog washing machines? People have marketed these before and they still seem like a really bad idea. A dog bathing tether seems like a much better idea.

A cat was rescued after being glued to highway in Minnesota. Timothy lost some claws & tissue from his pads and had to have glue removed from his nose, but he’s expected to be alright.
There’s a signature campaign in Missouri for a very important piece of animal welfare legislation called the “Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act” to get it on the November 2010 ballot. There are 5,000 licensed puppy mills in the U.S.. The Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation estimates Missouri alone has 3,000 puppy mills, only 1,802 of which are licensed. Vermont High Court is trying a case that could change pets’ valuation from the “property” to something closer to “family member”, allowing people to sue for emotional damage for the loss of a pet.

There are so many celebrities & dogs in the news right now. None of it is good news for the dogs.

Remember Michael Vick? The NFL player convicted of running a dog fighting operation? He gets to again play football for the Eagles in a couple of weeks. Animal lovers are understandably upset that he’s getting this second chance after brutalizing, exploiting, & terrorizing dogs for “sport”. See how some of the dogs rescued are doing today.

Jessica Simpson’s poor dog Daisy was taken by a coyote. Here’s a good article on how to keep your pets safe from coyotes.

We don’t have cable so I’ve mostly missed the Jon & Kate Plus 8 puke-fest. But, they got on my radar when the father Jon returned their two German Shepherds to their breeder. Disgusting. I hope these abhorrent people fade from view.

Blewett

Blewett the black lab needed rescuing from snowy Blewett Pass in Washington just 2 months ago , but he did the rescuing this month when he found another black lab by a river that needed rescuing. He even stayed with the other dog while rescuers repelled down a steep bank to the river. What a sweet dog!
In Oregon, two little dogs–a Border Terrier & a Chihuahua–ran off a very large cougar. The dogs will likely have a human escort now when they go out in the evenings.
Southwest Airlines is allowing pets on flights again after a longtime ban. Starting with flights on June 17th, you can bring your cat or small dog in the cabin. It will cost you $75. Pets still won’t be allowed in the cargo hold.
