DIY: Elevated Dog Bed Like Kuranda

The Columbus Dog Connection rescue group has a spiffy tutorial on how to make your own elevated dog bed out of PVC pipe like the beds listed in this post on how to keep your pets cool. (Be sure to check out the Columbus Dog Connection too!) This would make an incredible project for students, scouts, etc.!

There are plans for small or large beds. It has great tips on sourcing your materials so you save money—like looking for outdoor fabric in the second or remainders section of your fabric store, or checking with local companies that make awnings for businesses or boats to see if they have scraps. There are also invaluable tips to make sure you make a strong, durable bed. Sweet!

The tutorial includes clear instructions on how to sew the cover for the bed. And a spreadsheet for mass production if you plan to make beds to help your local shelter—they often want elevated beds to keep dogs off the cold, hard concrete floors in their facilities.

As an aside, Columbus Dog Connection looks like a remarkable group. Besides generously sharing such a great tutorial, it looks like the group is very busy. Check out the page on beds they’ve made for underfunded shelters—lots of volunteers and so many beds. Someone behind the scenes is doing great work. It takes an outstanding leader to organize so many volunteers and sponsors. Every rescue group should be so lucky!

Friday Fun: Kitty Baby Talking

Our cat, Sage, talks like a baby. She makes these tiny chirps and peeps that just kill me. We joke about how small she is depending on how little her voice is that day. Sometimes she sounds like she’s about an inch big. This Scottish Fold kitty is quite the baby talker too.

A cat was rescued after being glued to highway in Minnesota. Timothy lost some claws & tissue from his pads and had to have glue removed from his nose, but he’s expected to be alright.
There’s a signature campaign in Missouri for a very important piece of animal welfare legislation called the “Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act” to get it on the November 2010 ballot. There are 5,000 licensed puppy mills in the U.S.. The Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation estimates Missouri alone has 3,000 puppy mills, only 1,802 of which are licensed. That is a mind blowing number. Check out this map to see how your state compares.
In Spokane, 5 super-cute girl pet detectives are working to protect lost pets. How cool!
Vermont High Court is trying a case that could change pets’ valuation from the “property” to something closer to “family member”, allowing people to sue for emotional damage for the loss of a pet.
100 dogs have been found starving & 8 were found dead at a sled dog breeding kennel in Colorado operated by Sam and Diane Walker who live in Florissant, CO. (Information is provided at the end of the article on the multiple shelters caring for the dogs, if you want to make a donation.)

Coyotes May Eat More Cats Than Once Thought

A new study of coyotes in Tucson showed that cats make up 42% of their diet—more that any other food source. And in confrontations between cats and coyotes, cats were killed more than half the time. The study also raised the question of the impact of the Trap/Neuter/Release approach to feral cats. They may be providing a steady food source for coyotes.

I love these sweet birds! They’ll make such pretty cat toys, just add a little catnip to the stuffing. You can download the pattern and it’s clear instructions from Spool. So go pick some lovely fabric and give it a go. Spool is a fabric store in Philadelphia that also offers classes. They have yummy fabrics!
