Neko Chigura–Cat beds From Rice Straw

I like a lot of the Japanese aesthetic and I’m really liking these cat beds called neko chigura. (via moderncat)  Too bad neko chigura are not available in the US.  They’re one of the traditional crafts from Niigata Prefecture.

There are more refined woven cat beds like this one at Design Within Reach, which is available in the US, and this bed at Ikea. I prefer the chunky neko chigura though.  Besides the look, I like that they’re made from a renewable resource.  I wonder how they hold up to scratching—my cats would love it for that.

Check out the video to see how they’re made.

  1. awww! i love how the craftsman’s cat ‘helps’ with each basket he makes. and ‘pre-approves’ it for the eventual owner!

and were those pictures of satisfied customers that were sent in to the weavers? so cute! it is obviously a labor of love and not just a way to make a living.

  2. why arent they sold in the USA.. is it becas of the materials used not passing customs etc.. I would love to get one and live in australia.. I have been on their japanese website however to date can still not work out how to get one.. could anyone please enlighten me please

  3. These are fabulous!
I have been experimenting with a spherical cat bed. It has a similar look, but the neko chigura is more rustic looking than my product is.

  4. 私はイギリスに住んでいますが、ねこちぐらをイギリスまで送っていただくことは可能でしょうか?
    可能でしたら商品1個と送料、梱包費の見積もりをお願いいたします。
