Dried Bonito For Less
Does your cat love bonito flakes for a treat? We just got a 3.5 oz. bag for $3.75 at our local grocery store. (Bonito flakes are shaved, dried tuna and are used in Japanese cooking–especially for making dashi stock for miso soup.) Granted, our local grocrey store has an extensive selection of Asian foods, but you can probably find bonito flakes in most Asian markets. Compare that price to what you pay for bonito flakes packaged for cats and you’ll see a big difference. The bag I got came out to be about $1.07 per 1oz. and the dried bonito from the pet supply store came out to be $5.80-$7.60 per 1oz. Wow!

China—One Dog Per Family
Beijing responds to rabies outbreak with one dog per family rule. Earlier this year, parts of China responded to a rabies outbreak by killing over 54,000 dogs by clubbing them to death and forcing owners to hang their own dogs. The New York Times wrote an article on the killings and the resulting outcry within China (You can read the NYT article by clicking through on Newsvine. Warning: possibly disturbing image.)
