Mars Petcare is recalling bags of its Special Kitty Gourmet Bland dry cat food due to possible salmonella contamination. The bags of food were sold in Wal-Mart stores in:

  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Massachusetts
  • Maryland
  • Maine
  • North Carolina
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Virginia
  • Vermont
  • West Virginia

Here is the information you need to identify the affected bags:

  • Best If Used By Date: AUG 11 09
  • Best If Used By Date Location: Back of bag
  • Production Lot Code: 50 XXXX X  (Found on back of bag just after “Best If Used By” date. Consumers should look for “50” as the first two digits of the second line.)

UPC code numbers can be found right below the bar code on the package.

  • 3.5 lb.    Special Kitty gourmet blend       81131 17546
  • 7 lb.       Special Kitty gourmet blend       81131 17547
  • 18 lb.     Special Kitty gourmet blend       81131 17548

If you have a bag of the recalled food, dispose of the contents in a covered trash can and return the empty bag to the store where you bought it for a refund.

The Chicken-Basted Rawhide Chips for Dogs are being recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.  The lots affected are 2lbs. bags of with lot code JC23282 and UPC number 3270096463.

Pedigree recalled Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites in Nevada & California due to salmonella contamination. 20 lbs. and 50 lbs. bags are affected. At this time the FDA has no information on their site concerning this recall.

Menu Foods Reaches Settlement In Pet Food Class Action

Menu Foods has reached a tentative settlement in the class action suit brought by owners of pets killed or sickened due to contaminants in Menu Foods products. Del Monte Foods Inc., Nestle, Procter & Gamble, Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. Ltd. in Pixian, China, and Suzhou Textile Import & Export Co. in Jiangsu, China were also named in the suit.

In 2007 cats and dogs began falling ill and dying from kidney problems. The FDA eventually found melamine and cyanuric acid in many different pet foods. New recalls were being announced daily and over 60 million containers of food were recalled.
