How To Be A Good Vet Client

vetcaduceusxoJane has practical advice on how to How Not To Be A Dick At The Vet Hospital.  Both of Claire Lower’s parents are vets and she’s heard lots of stories about difficult owners.  Her father says, “Not all pet owners are crazy, but all crazy people have pets.”  Your pets will be better off if you’re not one of those crazy people!

Claire’s mom has also written a piece on her own blog on being a good vet client.  I was really struck by this piece of advice:

Be upfront with the doctor.  If you only have $250 to spend let them know.   The worst feeling is running blood tests and X-rays then finding out there is no more money to treat the pet.  I have a saying.. “X-rays are not therapeutic”

Don’t let your embarrassment hurt your pet.  Speak up and tell your vet what’s going on.  Your pets are counting on you!

Friday Fun: Boxer Meets Kitten

Here’s some serious sweetness!  Lennon the Boxer meets Figgy the kitten.  Lennon is such a polite pup—very nice manners.  He’s showing lots of great body-language.

  • play bow
  • lowering his body
trying to get his head lower than the kitten’s (not easy to do!)
  • turning head
  • averting gaze
  • licks & nibbles
  • gentle pawing

Do you see any more polite body language?  If you want to know more about canine body language, check out one of my favorite books, Canine Body Language: A Photographic Guide.

DIY: Giant Valentine’s Cat Toy Round-Up

How cute are these?!  Here are heaps & heaps of Valentine’s Day DIY projects for your cat.  Be sure to add some catnip to their stuffing.  All of these patterns are free.  But don’t be a tool and use patterns to make things to sell if the author asks you not to.  And please support the people providing all these patterns if they have etsy shops, stores, books, or patterns for sale.  These people totally rock for providing these patterns for free!

Newark Mayor Booker Helps Freezing Dog

I don’y even care if this was a photo-op.  Mayor Cory Booker rocks for responding personally to the tweets of a tv reporter and her camera man concerning a poor dog sitting on bare concrete in the freezing cold.

If you know of pets not being properly protected from cold weather, please do something.  Try talking to the owners—maybe offer to help find a solution.  If that doesn’t work, let animal control and animal welfare groups know there are pets in danger.  Don’t forget, when temperature drop below freezing, water bowls freeze over unless they’re heated.  So, even if a dog or cat has shelter, it may not have access to water.
