Authorities aren’t just enforcing the one dog per family rule in China. Apparently they are also culling all large breed dogs and any dog over 14 inches. The crackdown pushed 500 people to protest in Beijing while surrounded by police and while plain clothes police circulated in the crowd. Eighteen people were detained for questioning.

Earlier this year, parts of China responded to a rabies outbreak by killing over 54,000 dogs by clubbing them to death and forcing owners to hang their own dogs.
